Music and Family

For this blog I decided to interview my mom, the one and only Lisette Liopiros. My mom and I do not

share a lot of the same music tastes so I thought it would be interesting to hear from her. The first

question I asked my mom was what she would say her favorite type of music is; she responded with

"...maybe like R and B." This totally took me by surprise and I responded with shock. With this answer,

I asked if her music taste has changed since she was a teenager. My mom said, "oh yes for sure!"

She told me that she was actually really into rock as a teenager (to my surprise again), but that she

probably could not sit through a whole rock song now. We discussed how her music taste as a

teenager reflects very similarly to my music taste now. I then asked why she would say R and B is her

favorite. She said that she likes this the most because she likes the songs and the melodies involved

in it. I asked her if she had a favorite song and she said that she could not pick just one song... I see

where I get my indecisive-ness from. I told her how alike we are in that I was the same way on our first

blog post and could not pick just one genre or just one song that was my favorite. While she could not

pick just one song that was her favorite, she did tell me however that her favorite artist was Teddy

Pendergrass because she loves pretty much all of his songs. Here is one of the songs she likes by

Teddy Pendergrass.

I could not even finish the question, what her least favorite music type is before she said, “ugh

Jazz.” Which I laughed at because of how much she said she did not like it. I asked her why and she

said that it was too “all over the place.” I then asked her what she thought my least favorite type of

music was and she said, “classical haha I don’t know.” I would probably agree that I am not a big fan of

classical. She was spot on with knowing that her daughter’s favorite music style was alternative

though.

Jumping around a little bit, I asked how she enjoyed her favorite songs as a kid or teenager and she

told me how she had many vinyl records that she played on, you guessed it, a record player! (I

personally love how that is kind of coming back as a trendy thing now, they are so cool). She also

explained how her and her sister would listen to the radio, AM/FM radio. Without even asking, she

started telling me about how my grandmother would force her and my aunt to go to piano lessons.

They could not hate it any more, according to my mom. One day, my grandmother got sick and my

grandfather had to take them to their lesson; my mom and aunt told him how they loathed it, and he

did not make them go to another lesson after that! They tried keeping it a secret from my abuelita, but

it did not last for long. And that wrapped up my interview with my mom.

  1. Hi Olivia! I liked when you were talking, and your mom mentioned how her and her sister hated piano class. All my siblings and I were forced to play piano for many years until my dad found out how much we hated it.

  2. weird to think someone whose favorite genre of music is a R&B does not like jazz music, since they are somewhat closely related you'd think your mom would like jazz, but everyone has their preferences.

  3. Hi Olivia- I liked your interview with your mom, but I found it interesting that she didn't like jazz but her favorite genre was R&B because they have so much history and relation to one another.

  4. I really liked the part of the interview where you talked about the record player and how your mom used to listen to music. I also love how things from the past are coming back and getting trendy again. I always enjoy learning about how people used to do different things in the past and it’s amazing how the music industry and the resources to listen to music have changed and evolved over the years.
