Olivia Liopiros: Music and Me

 Hi everyone, I am Olivia Liopiros. Some things about me are that I am from Athens, GA (go dawgs!), I am majoring in biology with hopes to find a career in the medical field, and I ride for the equestrian team here at Converse. I am probably the least musically-inclined person you will ever meet, but I still love to listen and sing along to all types of music. At this point, I would insert a picture of my dog, but I do not have a dog, so instead here is a picture I took of my horse that I think is really funny (her name is Darlin).

1. Music I  Like Right Now:
    My current obsession has been anything Machine Gun Kelly; I have lowkey been obsessed with him since my early high school years, but it was not until this summer when I got to see him in concert that the obsession hit its all time high. It was literally the best concert ever (Iann Dior and Avril Lavigne were also there). I like almost all of his songs and I think the reason why I can listen to his music all day long and not get tired of it is because he has songs and albums that are so different from each other. He does rap, pop, rock, pop punk. I say I do not have just one music type but if you ask Spotify, she would tell you that my type is pop punk... I don't even know what that means to be honest. However, it honestly is impossible for me to pick just one song of his that I would call my favorite, but I attached two that are for sure my top ten! 
 

    Some of my other favorite artists are Juice Wrld, Halsey, Post Malone, Iann Dior, Avril Lavigne, Jxdn, and Panic! at the Disco. In my opinion, their music is just similar enough, but also just different enough, for me to totally jam out in the car all day long to. This next song I attached is by Juice Wrld, Benny Blanco, and Brendan Urie; it has been my favorite song since it came out in like 2018. 

2. Music Important to Me
    I probably could not tell you exactly when I discovered this song, but it has always just been that song that makes me think of happy memories. It's just a "feel good" song that I love; which is super weird because my mom always tells me my music taste isn't exactly "feel good" music (but I think its like a rule or something for moms not to like their kid's music). Anyway, this song is what was playing in my head at big events or milestones in my life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! 


3. Music That Just Isn't For Me
    This is hard for me to explain because like I said, I like songs of all different types of music. There are rap songs that I love and rap songs that I hate; there are country songs that I love singing to and country songs that I cannot stand. Since I cannot decide on a music type that I don't like, here is a song that when it comes on I immediately skip; I despise this song for no reason other than hating it.

    Hi Olivia, I think your horse is adorable, I have always wanted a horse. I also really like Machine Gun Kelly, Juice Wrld, Avril Lavigne, and Post Malone. These artists music is just catchy and meaningful.

    Hey! I actually really like the song Greatest love story, but I totally understand why people don't like it. I am a huge country music fan, I will listen to pretty much anything country. I find it interesting that there are some country songs that you like and others you don't. What is your favorite country song? Do you prefer pop country or country country, because I know people that only like one or the other.

    Good Morning Oliva , I loved how you showed interest in Juice Wrld he is a great artist that use his lyrics to touch the feelings of his listeners and I don't want to say this true or not but i heard Juice Wrld freestyle all his verses which is pretty crazy.

    Hey! I find the song "Bloodie Valentine" by Machine Gun Kelly that you posted in the section on music you are obsessed with very interesting. I like it a lot because it's an upbeat kind of music and it doesn't have autotune so it sounds more "natural." Nowadays many artists use autotune to modify their voices and I think this singer has a great voice.

Music and Rituals

     As someone who comes from a family with two very different cultures, I have been able to experience a lot of different rituals from those cultures. My mom's side of my family is from Cuba and my dad's side of my family is from Greece. I have been to weddings, funerals, church services, and just casual gatherings from both sides, and sometimes a blending of the two.      Greek music has this very specific... taste I guess you could say. There are also cultural dances that we do at gatherings like parties or weddings that are actually really fun. It's hard to explain so I added a video of some music and people dancing that you would typically hear and see at a wedding. I wasn't able to find the best video but this one works! In the video you can see people in a circle holding hands and dancing. This gets really exciting at big events like weddings when everyone joins in and there is a huge chain of people weaving in and out of the line under people's arm...

Music and Gender

In music, along with nearly everything else, there are these gender roles that say what women and men tend to lean towards more regarding style or taste. I cannot tell if my own opinion on what gender roles in music is accurate all the time or just what has been true for my own experiences. Generally I think of when we were younger, it was always the girls that wanted to sing; very rarely did the boys want to sing like at church or at school for a play or something like that. Also in high school, while I was never in band or theatre, I did go to concerts or musicals to support my friends, and what I noticed then was that theatre was very heavy in girls whereas band had more boys. Maybe that was just my school though.  Whe n I think of a band, I always think about all men. Very rarely can I think of seeing a woman playing on a band, and I could not think of one single all girl band so I googled it and only recognized The Go-Go's... which makes me really upset actually that there are...
